Asset Description
The Smithfield Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a 65 MW / 130 MWh facility located on Darug land in Smithfield NSW, approximately 30 km from the Sydney CBD. The Smithfield BESS was constructed and commissioned in 2025 and achieved full commercial operations status on 14 November 2025. The BESS combined with the existing 125MW Smithfield Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) plant forms the Iberdrola Australia Smithfield Energy Facility (SEF).
The Smithfield Energy Facility plays a vital role in enhancing the company’s flexible firming capabilities in the NSW region of the National Electricity Market (NEM), supporting wind and solar generation across Iberdrola Australia’s renewable energy portfolio. The Smithfield BESS also actively participates in all Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets, supporting and enhancing network stability and reliability of the broader electricity system.
