Proposal

The proposed Bundaberg Regional Battery at Gin Gin (the project) is located on privately owned land on the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, Taribelang Bunda people’s country, within the Bundaberg Regional Council and approximately 20 km west on the Bruce Highway from the Gin Gin township. If approved, the battery will have a capacity of up to 500 MW.

Current Stage

The project lodged its Material Change of Use (MCU) and Reconfiguration of a Lot (ROL) Application with Bundaberg Regional Council in June 2024. As part of  the Development Application, a series of investigations were undertaken, including traffic impact assessments, stormwater management, ecological assessments, bushfire risk assessments, and others. The outcome of these investigations has been taken into consideration for the proposed project.

Next Steps

As an Impact Assessable Development, the project MCU and ROL Application is currently undergoing a rigorous approval process through Bundaberg Regional Council assessment since June 2024. The project held its public notification comment period, as directed by the Bundaberg Regional Council, from 10 February 2025 to 28 February 2025.

Iberdrola Australia, together with Bundaberg Regional Council, has considered the submissions received during public notification, and the project is now in the Decision Stage.

Latest News

Last year in August 2025 a flyer was distributed to the community via mail out to address frequently asked questions raised in recent rounds of community engagement. In September 2025 a further submission was made on the Development Application to address feedback and items raised by stakeholders. This submission included additional information on topics such as fire safety, waterway protection and community benefits.

A copy of the flyer can be found here, and an executive summary of the further submission is available here.
