Iberdrola Australia is proposing to develop, construct, own and operate a Battery Energy Storage System at Kingswood. The Kingswood Battery would enable renewable energy to be reliably provided to consumers across NSW when it's needed most.
- Location: 744 Burgmanns Lane, Kingswood (6km south of Tamworth)
- Capacity: Up to 270 MW, supplying up to 1,080 Megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage capacity
- Powering: 65,000 homes
- Area: 8 hectares (20% of the total site)
- Connection to: Tamworth substation via new 330kV overhead/underground cable
- Transmission line: a relatively short 1,500 metres of transmission line will be required.
This site was selected based on its proximity to the Tamworth substation, to minimise impacts on the community, existing infrastructure, and the environment.
Community Update
We are in the late stages of planning and development for the Kingswood Battery project. We have completed detailed social, environmental, and technical assessments to feed into the Environmental Impact Statement. We also undertook technical studies and site investigations to further inform the project design.
In December 2025, we welcomed the community to two drop-in information sessions at the Acacia Function Centre. The Kingswood Battery team shared project updates and had meaningful, in-depth conversations with our neighbours. The feedback we received is important and will play a role in shaping the development of the project. We’ll be following up soon with attendees to explore ways to continue to work closely together, minimise impacts, and provide more detail on specific topics of interest.
